New Clothes for New Year's Day by Hyun-joo Bae
New Clothes for New Year's Day Author: Hyun-joo Bae Illustrator: Hyun-joo Bae Publisher: Kane / Miller Books Copyright: 01/01/2007 Number of Pages: 32 Genre: International Literature
New Clothes for New Year's Day is about a young Korean girl who is eager to wear her new outfit on New Year's Day. She talks about how excited she is for everything new. Step by step, she puts on her traditional Korean outfit for the New Year's holiday. The reader is able to learn all of the effort that goes into such a beautiful tradition.
When I get my own classroom, I plan to have one day each week where we discuss multicultural or diverse topics. This book would fit into that category perfectly. I would cut out all of the different pieces to the outfit and have the students put glue them on a picture of her in the correct order. This is also an awesome way to incorporate retell.
The illustrations in this book appear to be drawn and colored with pencils. There are few colors, but they perfectly capture the culture that the book is portraying.
