Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
Room on the Broom Author: Julia Donaldson Illustrator: Axel Scheffler Publisher: Puffin Books Copyright: 2001 Number of Pages: 32 Genre: Modern Fantasy
In the book Room on the Broom a witch is flying through the air on her broom when she begins to lose some of her things. As her animal friends find them for her, they ask for a ride on her broomstick in return for their help. Each time a friend asks, the question of "is there room on the broom?" comes up.
This story would be awesome to use when working on retelling. The story line is pretty simple and it is easy to follow the sequence of events. There are also tons of fun activities that could easily be incorporated into this lesson.
The illustrations in this story are cartoon-like. The darker color scheme makes this a great book to teach in the fall, around Halloween. The inviting pictures are perfect for struggling readers. It is easy to follow the story line based off of the illustrations alone.
