This book is about two young boys who are pen pals. One of these boys, Elliott, is from America, while the second boy, Kailash, is from India. Through writing back and forth, these two boys learn that they are actually quite similar, despite living thousands of miles away from each other.
This book could easily be taught in any elementary grade. In the classroom, I would use this book to introduce the concept of "pen-pals". I would then have the students write to their own "pen pal", which would be a student at another elementary school in the same grade. The students would be writing with a purpose and as a result, would care much more about their writing. For gifted students, I would have them write in the form of a letter. I would also have them address their envelope independently.
The illustrations in this book are bright and vivid. They appear to be made out of tissue paper and other realistic objects, placed together to make the illustrations. These illustrations are much different than normal and really set this book apart from others.
