This book is about a young boy and his dog who get up before sunrise each morning to deliver newspapers. The boy observes the peaceful world around him as he delivers papers. He is awake while the world around him still sleeps and dreams. When he arrives back home, his family is just waking up and fixing breakfast. However, he is crawling back in bed with his dog so that he can dream.
I would use this book in an upper elementary classroom. It would be great when discussing perspective. The students could discuss why such a young boy has a job or how this job would impact his daily life. They could write to tell these ideas or write to finish out a typical day for the paperboy. For my ELL students, I would pull them prior to the lesson to build background knowledge. I would provide pictures to help them recognize unfamiliar words when reading, as well.
The illustrations in this book appear to be made with paint. they are made with soft edges and the colors are earth-toned, soft colors that help to emphasize that it's dark outside.
