This is the classic tale of Johnny Appleseed. Born during the Revolutionary War, Johnny had no reason to stay in Massachusetts, so he decided to move west. Along the way, he cleared land and planted apple orchards so future travelers would have food to eat. He quickly became known as Johnny Appleseed when the travelers finally made it to the west and befriended Johnny.
Due to the short paragraphs on each page, I would recommend this book to a 3rd grade class. This could be a great way to incorporate social studies into reading with the Revolutionary War and the westward expansion that occurred during that time. SPED students would most likely need a simpler version of this classic story. They could also have a partner in the class to read with them and discuss the book for comprehension.
The illustrations in this book are the focal point of each page. The illustrations blend into the text so that the text appears to be a part of the illustration. They are extremely detailed and appear to be created with paint. Each page depicts the story details well, changing from dark colors to cheery colors as the mood in the story changes. They would make it much easier to follow the story.
